Members bring along short stories, poems, extracts from books and magazines and, on occasions, some of their own work. The subject matter can be serious, informative, or simply amusing, but whatever the topic it invariably generates debate. The range of readings reaches far and wide. We have enjoyed love stories, biographies and lots of facts.
They say that reading aloud, like singing, is good for one's well-being and we have found this to be so.
We are always happy to welcome new members and on most Mondays in the month we meet on Zoom but do try to meet face to face occasionally when we guarantee excellent coffee, chocolate biscuits and a good view, should you become tired of listening.
In September we continued to follow the life of Mavis Nicholson, the child in Japan taken from home at an early age to train as a Geiko, and eavesdroped on life aboard a cruise ship. A story by Rudyard Kipling, Naples ’44 – by Norman Lewis, a chapter from The Boy Made of Blocks by Keith Stuart (which is an account of raising his autistic son), and a story from Women’s Weekly provided considerable contrast whilst Chris Barber writing on Alexander Cordell country and his interaction with the author was of great interest as a few of the group had met him.
Our readings are many and varied so please feel free to join us any Monday; it doesn’t have to be a regular commitment and we are happy to welcome members who prefer just to listen.
We meet on Zoom 2pm on Mondays
