Group members can if they wish pre-select a piece of music and link it to a relevant YouTube video and then give some background to their selection: personal connection, the artist/ composer, historical relevance, etc. After hearing the piece the group has an open discussion on it.
We cover a wide variety of genres, from classical to show songs to the occasional 'flash mob', together with the odd exploration into strange instruments.
We have been very happy to welcome a new member this month who added an element of humour with Goldie looking Chain’s tribute to Cwmbran and he also introduced us to Indian Kirtan music and Jan Gabarek and the Hillyard Ensemble. Following on from The Proms, Bohemium Rhapsody made three appearances and Bill Bailey popped up twice. We listened to the Hurrian Hymn, possibly the oldest known song (c.1400 B.C.) and we heard Spiritus Sanctus Vivificans Performed by Anna Sandström and written by Hildegard of Bingen which is nearly 900 years old We continued to listen to various choirs including the Vienna Pop and Jazz Choir and our unusual instrument was the Bandoneon. Folk songs and Barber Shop Quartets continued to entertain us and BB King at Sing Sing Prison playing the Blueswas an interesting watch. Film Music include Lara’s Theme and Bare Necessities which shows just how diverse our choices are!
Favourites old and new are interspersed with interesting facts and every Tuesday in one hour from 11 am to 12 noon on Zoom we try to find something for everyone. Do feel free to just drop in and listen.
